Born in Kansas, David grew up in Montreal, Quebec, and Canada. He started college on a football scholarship to Southern Illinois University in 1967. Graduating in 1970, he began a Master’s program in European History and finally left Illinois in 1972 to go on a two-year mission to France. For 24 years he taught history and Bible, at Emmanuel Christian School in Montreal (1977-2001).
David gave his first sermon at age 18 and preached and led hundreds of Bible studies while he taught high school. His motto for Christian service is “He must increase, and I must decrease.” The thing that made the biggest difference to David’s training for public ministry was the regular reading of the Word of God. In 1972, he took a vow to read his Bible at least 5 minutes every day. He soon expanded that to reading the entire Bible through each year, three chapters a day. He has read the Bible through about 50 times. It is that familiarity with the whole Council of God that has marked David’s ministry.
In 2017, he moved to Bakersfield and he and Leanda began attending Rock Harbor Church regularly.
In 2019, David took over the Koinonia Bible Class and it turned out to be a wonderful fit. In 2020, Pastor Brandon asked David to join his new pastoral team to help him with the rapidly growing church and, to preach occasionally. We are delighted to serve in such an exciting church, led by such a visionary pastor.
Phillip Bartell has been in the ministry full-time since 1973, serving in a parachurch ministry for 11 years and then the pastoral ministry for 37 years. He was raised on a cotton farm in Bakersfield with his three younger brothers. He’s a proud Driller from Bakersfield High School, class of 1969, an alumni of Bakersfield Junior College, where he met his wife of 48 years while active in Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC), an alumni of Cal State University Bakersfield (CSUB), where he received a B.A. in history, and an alumni of The International School of Theology, where he received a Masters of Divinity in expository preaching with honors. After completion of his Masters, Phillip was invited to serve as an instructor at ISOT, where he helped develop the student wives’ program.
His early calling to ministry took him (and Teri) to Northridge in 1973 and the surrounding campuses in the San Fernando Valley with CCC. Ten years later, while in seminary at ISOT, Phillip led a group in 1983 to the People’s Republic of China to study the language and culture at the Nanjing Teacher’s College.
In 1984 God led him to leave the arena of academics and spend time in the trenches of pastoral ministry, where he founded Grace Community Church of Bakersfield in 1985, utilizing his ministry skills for the past 37 years. Having a passion for evangelistic preaching, the Lord provided him opportunities to hold six Truth Crusades in five countries of Africa in 2008, 2010 and 2012.
In December of 2020 God sent him on yet another journey, and he was uprooted like Abraham from GCC to follow a different trajectory. Through a series of providential events Phillip began to attend Rock Harbor’s Wednesday night Bible Study…and has never looked back. He was asked to join the staff at Rock Harbor Church in February of 2021.
In addition, he is an accomplished pianist; his wife, Teri, a much sought-after Kindergarten teacher. They have a married daughter, their pride and joy.
